The Tank, a line of wristwatches made by Cartier, was created in 1917 and born of the inspiration of the Renault tanks which this French artisan saw being used along the Western Front. The prototype of this watch was given as a gift by Cartier to General John Pershing, leader of the American Expeditionary Force.
The lines and proportions of this watch are very similar to those of the tanks found on World War I battlefields. With a shape that features both a square and a rectangle, its straps are hidden under vertical sidepieces to keep them hidden from view. Tank watches typically have sword-shaped hands that are blue and accent their silvered opaline guilloché dials.
Like most Cartier watches, the winding crowns on the Tank watch line have sapphire cabochons on them; it is also possible to many models of the Tank that are embellished with diamonds. Some of the metal bracelets on these models come with indentations that bring to mind the distinctive tracks of real tanks.
After nearly one hundred years since the original, there are currently more than thirty variations of Tank watch, featuring both automatic and quartz offering; this amazing design has also been the inspiration for countless copies. One of the most current versions of the Tank, the Tank Francaise, was released in 1996.
